An isolated island located almost directly on the equator in the Western Pacific Ocean belonging to Kiribati. Local name is Banaba Island. Discovered by the British in 1804, it is famous for its guano and phosphate mines. The inhabitants were forcibly relocated by Japan in 1942 and by the British in 1945, and the issue of their return remains unresolved. 5.6 km2 . 295 people (2010).
