Makabe [town] - Makabe
An old town in Makabe District, western Ibaraki Prefecture. It occupies the western slopes of Mt. Tsukuba and Mt. Kaba and the Sakuragawa lowlands, the latter of which are rice paddy fields. The main settlement was under the control of the Makabe clan in the Middle Ages, and in the early modern period it was the castle town of the Makabe Domain. Brewing is popular, and stone is also produced in abundance. In October 2005, it was incorporated as a city, becoming Sakuragawa City, by merging with Iwase Town, Nishiibaraki District, and Yamato Village, Makabe District. Area: 63.40 km2 . Population: 20,175 (2003).

茨城県西部,真壁郡の旧町。筑波山や加波山の西斜面と桜川低地を占め,低地は水田地帯をなす。主集落は中世真壁氏の支配下にあり,近世には真壁藩の城下町。醸造が盛んで,石材も多産。2005年10月,西茨城郡岩瀬町,真壁郡大和村と合併し市制,桜川市となる。63.40km2。2万175人(2003)。
