A town in Yamakoshi County, Hokkaido. It occupies the northwestern shore of Uchiura Bay and the mountainous area behind it. The town center is the intersection of the Hakodate Main Line and the Muroran Main Line, and many people work for the railways. In addition to dairy farming, the town also engages in fishing, such as scallop farming, and forestry. The Do-o Expressway runs through the town. 北海道山越(やまこし)郡の町。内浦湾の北西岸と背後の山地を占める。中心部は函館本線と室蘭本線の交点で鉄道従業者が多い。酪農を主体とした農業のほか,ホタテガイの養殖などの漁業,林業も行う。道央自動車道が通じる。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。310.76km2。6386人(2010)。
