A perennial epiphytic fern of the Polypodiaceae family that opens its leaves in early autumn and loses them in midsummer. The rhizome is usually buried in moss, is about 4 mm in diameter, brownish-red, and the scales fall off early except at the tip. The leaves are 20-30 cm long, deeply pinnately lobed, and have sparse long hairs on the underside, but they fall off easily. The veins are pinnately branched and do not reach the margins. When the leaves dry, the rachis rolls outward. The sporangia are arranged in a row on both sides along the rachis, and do not have an intumescent membrane. Denda is also called rendaz (renda), and is one of the old names for ferns. Shaguji is said to be a tribute temple, but there is no temple or shrine of the same name in existence, so it is thought to be a folk name.
