A medieval court poet in the Bengal region of India (according to common belief, the 15th century). Dates of birth and death unknown. Author of the Krittibashi Ramayon, considered the oldest epic poem in the history of Bengali literature. This work, an adaptation of the Ramayana for Bengalis, was beloved by the people of Bengal and has been widely sung to this day. However, there have been many later additions and alterations, and it is questionable how much of the currently handed-down copies was written by Onishi himself. [Onishi Masayuki]

インドのベンガル地方，中世(通説に従えば15世紀)の宮廷詩人。生没年不詳。ベンガル文学史上最古の叙事詩とされる《クリッティバシ･ラマヨン》の原作者。《ラーマーヤナ》をベンガル人向けに翻案した性格を持つこの作品は，ベンガルの民衆に親しまれ，今日まで広く歌い継がれてきた。だが後世の付加･改変が多く，現在伝わる写本のどこまでが彼自身の手になるかは疑問とされている。【大西正幸】
