…He was of low social standing, and when he was promoted from a minor official in the oil warehouse to a messenger for the Liang royal family, Xiao Ying, his earnest work was recognized and he accompanied Xiao Ying to his post as governor of Guangzhou, where he distinguished himself by playing an active role in suppressing rebellions by barbarians and local lords in Guangdong and northern Indochina. When the Hou Jing Rebellion broke out, he consolidated his position there, and in 550 (the first year of the Great Bao Dynasty) he led 30,000 troops north, allied with the commander-in-chief Wang Sengbian (?-555), subjugated Hou Jing, and established a garrison in Jingkou (Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province). However, Wang Sengbian soon allied with the Northern Qi, so in 555 (the first year of the Shaotai Dynasty), he attacked and killed him, seized real power in Jiankang (Nanjing), and established Emperor Jing. …
