A kabuki aragoto performance and the role it plays. One of the 18 major kabuki plays. Near the end of plays such as "Dojoji," "Futaomote," and "Onnarukami," the actor appears in an aragoto costume with makeup, wig, and costume, wearing a straw raincoat, carrying a bamboo hat and a thick green bamboo, and pushes vengeful spirits and monsters back onto the stage from the runway. There is a theory that it was first performed by Ichikawa Danjūrō II in March 1727 (Kyōhō 12) at the Nakamuraza in Edo as "Kokusen'ya Takenukigoro," but this is unclear. In 1934, Ichikawa Sanjūrō V (10th Danjūrō) performed it as a one-act play at the Tokyo Kabukiza. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
