Prince Osabe

A member of the imperial family at the end of the Nara period. Son of Emperor Kōnin and Princess Inoue. Died after being caught up in a dispute over the succession to the throne. In May 772, his mother was deposed for high treason, and the crown prince, Prince Oto, was also deposed, his royal status revoked, he was made a commoner, and imprisoned in Uchi District, Yamato Province (Gojō City). He was 12 years old at the time. The previous year, he had become crown prince and heir to the throne, but it seems he and his mother lost their positions in the struggle against the forces supporting Prince Yamabe (later Emperor Kanmu) as heir to the throne. He died in imprisonment with his mother. Four years later, in June 772, an incident occurred in Suo Province (Yamaguchi Prefecture) where Prince Bonchō Ashihara Shizuo claimed to be Prince Oto, misled the peasants, and was exiled to Izu.

奈良時代末の皇族。光仁天皇と井上内親王の子。皇位継承をめぐる争いにまきこまれて没した。宝亀3(772)年5月,母親が大逆罪で廃されたため,皇太子であった他戸親王も廃され,皇族の身分を取り消され庶民とされて大和国宇智郡(五条市)に幽閉された。時に12歳。前年,皇太子となり皇位継承者となったが,皇位継承者として山部親王(のちの桓武天皇)を推す勢力との対抗のなかで,母と共に失脚したものらしい。幽閉先で母と共に没した。4年後の宝亀10年6月,周防国(山口県)で凡直葦原賤男公が他戸皇子と称し,百姓を惑わせ,伊豆に配流されるという事件が起こっている。
