An old city facing the Hiuchi Nada Sea in northern Ehime Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. The Yosan Line runs through the city. The city is known for its hosho paper, and in addition to rice and wheat, it also cultivates vegetables and seaweed. There are spinning and machinery factories, and the city has been designated a technopolis. In November 2004, it was incorporated into Saijo City along with Komatsu Town and Tanbara Town in Shuso County. Area: 73.89 km2 . Population: 33,485 (2003). 愛媛県北部,燧灘(ひうちなだ)に面する旧市。1972年市制。予讃線が通じる。奉書紙を特産し,米麦作のほか野菜栽培,ノリ養殖が行われている。紡績・機械工場があり,テクノポリスの指定を受けている。2004年11月周桑郡小松町,丹原町と西条市へ編入。73.89km2。3万3485人(2003)。
