Ooringo - Great apple

…These seedlings were distributed throughout Japan mainly by the Bureau of Industrial Promotion, and cultivation progressed in suitable areas such as the Tohoku region, Hokkaido, and Nagano Prefecture. Initially, they were called ooringo to distinguish them from the traditional jiringo, but the ooringo, with its larger fruit and better quality, overtook the jiringo in cultivation, and ooringo came to be called simply 'apple', as it is today.
[Variety]
More than 600 varieties have been introduced into Japan from the early Meiji period to the present, but the number of varieties commercially cultivated, including both introduced and domestically developed varieties, is only about 10 (illustration).

…それらの苗木は勧業寮が中心となって各地に配布され，東北地方，北海道，長野県などの適地で栽培が進展した。当初，それらを従来から栽培されていたジリンゴと区別するためにオオリンゴと呼んだが，果実が大きく，品質のよいオオリンゴがジリンゴの栽培を圧倒し，それとともにオオリンゴは単にリンゴと呼ばれるようになって現在に至った。
