At that time, the present Calcutta area, which is located on the natural levee on the east bank of the Hugli River, only had three rural settlements from the north: Sutānuti (north of the present Howrah Bridge), Kālikata (around the present Dalhousie Square, from where the local name originates), and Govindpur (south of the present Maidan).
