A Roman centurion and martyr in Christian legend. He is known as the man who pierced Jesus' side with a spear when he was crucified. According to the Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine (13th century), he was converted after seeing the natural disasters that occurred at the moment of the piercing, and his weakened eyesight was restored by the blood of Jesus that ran down the spear. He then devoted himself to missionary work in Caesarea in Cappadocia, where he was captured and beheaded for refusing to worship idols. According to legend, the spear that pierced Jesus was later discovered by Helena, the mother of Constantine I, along with the Holy Cross and the Holy Nails, and became associated with the veneration of Longinus from the 6th century onwards, giving rise to various legends about the Holy Lance.
