Its main rivers are the Paraná, Paraguay, and Pilcomayo, which join together to form the Rio de la Plata, which connects to the Atlantic Ocean. The Paraguay River runs through the center of the country, dividing it into Eastern and Western Paraguay. Eastern Paraguay accounts for 40% of the country's land area and nearly 98% of its population. Its topography is a mix of hills and plains, and it borders Brazil at the Amambai Mountains. The altitude ranges from around 80m above sea level in the plains to 700-800m in the Paraná Plateau, and it receives relatively high rainfall and is covered with lush forests.
