Hodoimo - Hodoimo

Japanese: ホドイモ - ほどいも
Hodoimo - Hodoimo

A perennial plant of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). Also known simply as Hodo. The underground stem is long and slender, with tuberous roots in places. The aboveground stem is thin and creeping, wrapping around other plants. The leaves are alternate, pinnate with 3-5 leaflets, stalked, and the terminal leaflet is ovate with a pointed tip. There are deciduous stipules. In July and August, a flower stalk of more than 10 cm long emerges from the leaf axil, and pale yellow-white flowers bloom. The calyx tube is bell-shaped, with five petals and a twisted keel. The pod is broadly linear, 5 cm long, splits open at both the top and bottom, and contains many seeds. It grows on the forest edge or under the forest, distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu and Chugoku. The tuberous roots are edible.
