This refers to the lineage of the Kanō Sanraku school of the Kanō school, which remained active in Kyoto even after the establishment of the Edo Shogunate. The Kanō school, which began with Masanobu, first served the Tokugawa clan with the establishment of the Edo Shogunate, and moved from Kyoto to Sunpu and Edo to work. Later, Tan'yū, Naonobu and Yasunobu were bestowed residences in Edo by the Shogunate, and moved to Edo to become official painters for the Shogunate. In contrast, the Sanraku and Sansetsu families, who had close ties to the Toyotomi clan, lived in Kyoto for generations and continued to paint without receiving a stipend from the Shogunate, so this school is called Kyoto Kano in contrast to Edo Kano.
