...After it was discovered that intelligent life could not exist on Mars, interest shifted to planets in distant star systems, and the imagination of aliens became extremely diverse. SG Weinbaum's "A Martian Odyssey" (1934) created several models in which organisms in different environments think in completely different ways, and had a great influence on later science fiction. Among them was a unique organism whose main component was silicon instead of carbon, and which could eat sand and turn back into sand. The story ends without revealing whether it was an intelligent organism or not. ...
