A powerful clan in Hitachi Province in the Middle Ages. A branch of the Hitachi Taira clan and the Daijo clan. Taira Shigetomo's son Shigeie was native to Oguri, Niiharu County, Hitachi Province (present-day Kyowa Town, Makabe County, Ibaraki Prefecture) and took the name Oguri. This area became the territory of Ise Shrine at the end of the Heian period and was called Oguri Mikuriya. The Oguri clan inherited the position of Geshi (later Jito) of Mikuriya. Shigeie's grandson Shigenari served Minamoto no Yoritomo, taking part in the Jisho-Juei Civil War and the Oshu Conquest, and was also appointed as the construction magistrate of Kashima Shrine. During the Nanboku-cho period, Oguri Shigesada was a vassal to Ashikaga Takauji. During the Muromachi period, Hitachi Province was under the control of the Kamakura Shogunate, but the Oguri clan instead allied with the shogunate in Kyoto.
