…However, it was not until the 19th century in Europe that travel guides were published in series by region (country) in the format and content that we use today, aimed primarily at leisure travelers. In particular, the German Karl Baedeker (1801-59) and the Englishman John Murray (1808-92) are considered the pioneers of this field, the former in 1828 and the latter in 1836. Both men added their own names to the titles of their books, and thereafter “Baedeker” and “Murray” became synonymous with travel guides. …
