A dance performed with a hat or umbrella in hand. The hat dance follows the tradition of Shinto ritual dance, in which the dancer first picks up the clothes or headgear and dances to purify them, but since the early modern period, various devices have been used as dance props. Well-known folk dances include the Hanagasa Dance of Yamagata Prefecture, in which dancers hold hats decorated with flowers, the Yagibushi of Gunma Prefecture, the Mugiyabushi of Gokayama, Toyama Prefecture, which makes effective use of sedge hats, and the Shiraishi Dance of Shiroishi Island, Okayama Prefecture, in which the dancer holds a lacquered hat. Kabuki dances include the Fujimusume, who dances with a sandan hat in both hands, and the Kikuzukushi, in which dancers hold a flower hat in their hands.
