Halberstadt - Halberstadt (English spelling)

A city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in central Germany. It was part of the former East Germany from 1949 to 1990. It is a picturesque town at an altitude of 115 meters along the Holtme River, a tributary of the Bode River, at the northeastern foot of the Harz Mountains. It has a population of 41,400 (2000). Most of the residents are Protestant. The food and luxury goods (canned meat and vegetables), machinery (motors, agricultural machinery), metal, asbestos, and concrete industries are located here. In 1892, the first German Trade Union Congress was held here. As it was the seat of a bishopric from 827 until it was annexed to Brandenburg in 1648, there are many old Romanesque and Gothic churches and historical buildings related to the bishop, centered around the Gothic cathedral that still remains today, making it the religious center of Magdeburg.
