<br /> A forest in Higashi-Oiso, Azuchi-cho, Omihachiman-shi, Shiga Prefecture. Located in a corner of Gamou- no , which has been written about in waka poetry since the Manyo period, the forest has been a popular resting spot for many travelers on the Nakasendo road. It is estimated that in the past, this area was a large forest several times larger than it is today . According to legend, this area once had springs of water and was not habitable, but after a man named Ishibe no Omuraji planted tree saplings and prayed to the gods, it soon became a large forest, and it was named "Oiso Forest" because Omuraji lived to be over 100 years old. In the forest, Oiso Shrine, a shrine listed in the Engishiki , is located, and it has been revered as a place of faith since ancient times. As part of the large forest formed in the lowland still exists, it is also a valuable place from an academic perspective, and was designated a national historic site in 1949 (Showa 24).
