...In today's Japanese schools, most elementary, middle and high schools use a trimester system, while most universities use a two-term system. Kaisei School (one of the predecessors of the University of Tokyo), a higher education institution, was the first to define the period from September to July of the following year as the "gakusai" (corresponding to today's school year) in 1873. This was because they employed foreign teachers and adopted a Western-style school system.
