Aqua-Lung (English spelling)

Japanese: アクアラング（英語表記）Aqua-Lung

The brand name of underwater breathing equipment. It means "underwater lungs." It uses a tank filled with compressed air and combines a mask with a device that adjusts the pressure to deliver air. It was invented in 1943 by French ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and others. It was initially used for mine disposal, but after it became commercially available in 1947 after World War II, it became popular worldwide as diving equipment and underwater sports equipment.

水中呼吸用具の商品名。「水中肺」の意。圧縮空気を詰めたボンベを利用し，圧力を調節して空気を送る装置とマスクを組み合わせたもの。 1943年，フランスの海洋探検家ジャック・イブ・クストーらによって考案された。当初は機雷の処理などに用いられたが，第2次世界大戦後の 1947年に市販されて以来，潜水用具，水中スポーツ用具として世界的に普及した。
