Iimori Castle

Japanese:
Iimori Castle
A medieval mountain castle located on Iimoriyama (approximately 315m above sea level) between Hojo, Daito City, Osaka Prefecture and Minamino, Shijonawate City. It is also called Iimoriyama Castle. It is a stronghold with a panoramic view of the plains of Kawachi below, and is in an ideal location to control the East Koyasan Highway. During the Battle of Shijonawate in the early Nanboku-cho period, a subordinate of Takano Moronao on the Ashikaga side was stationed on Iimoriyama (Taiheiki, Volume 26), but it is unclear whether a full-scale castle had been built at the time. Later, in the early 16th century, Kizawa Nagamasa, a vassal of Hatakeyama Yoshihide, who ruled Kawachi, built it and became his residence. Later, Hatakeyama Ariuji, the guardian of half of Kawachi, resided in the castle, and it became the political center of northern Kawachi, but it was attacked and captured by Hosokawa Harumoto. It then became the castle of Miyoshi Nagayoshi, who moved his base from Akutagawa Castle (present-day Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture) to Imori Castle, which became the center of Kinai until Oda Nobunaga entered Kyoto. During Nagayoshi's time as lord of the castle, many of his retainers were baptized into Christianity. At the foot of the mountain is the grave of Kusunoki Masatsura, who died in the Battle of Shijonawate, as well as Shijonawate Shrine, which enshrines Masatsura and 24 other people.
