He also speculated that the aurora seen at the North Pole was a subterranean light leaking out. In 1818, American soldier John Cleves Symmes (1780-1829) claimed that there were holes several thousand miles in diameter at both the North and South Poles, and that inside them existed a subterranean world in the shape of concentric spheres, with the oceans on the surface flowing into the interior through the holes at the poles. He proposed an expedition to confirm this "Symmes's Hole," but it was never realized. ...
