Centuria (English spelling) centuria (Latin)
In ancient Rome, it was a land area of 200 jugella (about 50 ha), and also the basic unit of a legion or a civil assembly. It is derived from centum (100), the former being 100 times a heredium (a hereditary land of 2 jugella), and the latter originally meaning a hundred men. Historically, the centuria organization, founded by King Servius Tullius, was important, and citizens were ranked into classis based on their wealth, and were required to serve in the military, and were then made to belong to a centuria. It was made up of 18 cavalry, 5 infantry classis of 80, 20, 20, 20, and 30, 1 poor citizen, 2 buglers, and 2 artisans, for a total of 193 centuria.
