A major character in Shakespeare's tragedy "Othello". He is the standard bearer of the black general Othello. He is the one who causes the tragedy by making Othello go mad with jealousy by falsely accusing Desdemona of having an affair with the lieutenant. There have been many theories about Iago's motives for evil since ancient times, making him a controversial character.
