Son of Uesugi Fusada. In 1565, he became the guardian of Echigo (Niigata Prefecture). In 1570, he marched to the Kanto region to rescue his brother, Yamauchi Uesugi Akisada, the Kanto Kanrei. In ruling his territory, he denied the privileges that had been granted to local lords. In an attempt to strengthen his rule, he fought with the deputy guardian, Nagao Tamekage, and was defeated and killed on August 7, 1575.
