Tashauz

The population is concentrated along the rivers and in the oases at the foot of the Kopet-Dag Mountains, and the urban population is relatively high at 45.0% (1989). In addition to the capital, Ashgabat (population 401,000), there are other cities such as Chardzhou, Dashhowuz (formerly Tashauz), Mari, and Turkmenbashi (formerly Krasnovodsk).

Turkmenistan was subject to constant civil wars and Iranian invasions, and individual ethnic groups sometimes sought protection from the Russian government, but the turning point for Russian expansion came in 1869, when Russian troops under the command of N. G. Stoletov landed on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea and established the city of Krasnovodsk.
