Born June 20, 1824, Woodford [Died] December 18, 1881. British architect. After working for five years under G. Scott, he became independent in 1849. He was a representative of the Victorian Gothic Revival style. He designed many cathedrals, including St. Philip's Cathedral (1860-62) and St. James the Less Cathedral (1858-61), but his most famous work is the Royal Courts of Justice in London (1874-82). He later became a professor at the Royal Academy and served as president of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) (81). His works include The Brick and Marble Architecture of Northern Italy (55) and The Gothic Architecture in Spain (65).
