Literally an Italian term meaning "new realism," the term is generally used in literary history to refer to post-World War II Italian literature that deals with the anti-fascist struggle. However, some critics trace the origins of neorealism to Moravia's "The Indifferent" (1929), a novel that portrays disobedience to the fascist regime, and to Carlo Bernari's (1909-92) "Three Factory Workers" (1934), which depicts the awakening of anti-authority sentiment among workers. In addition, a large number of anti-fascist struggle stories were published after the war, and some refer to these collectively as neorealism.

　字義通りには〈新しいリアリズム〉を意味するイタリア語で，文学史的にはふつう，反ファシズム闘争を題材にした第2次大戦後のイタリア文学を総称していう。ただし，ファシズム政権に不従順な小説を発表したことからモラビアの《無関心な人びと》(1929)に，また，労働者の反権力意識の目ざめを描いたことからベルナーリCarlo Bernari(1909‐92)の《三人の工員》(1934)に，ネオレアリズモの起源を求めようとする批評家もいる。また戦後におびただしい数の反ファシズム闘争体験談が出版され，これらを一括してネオレアリズモと呼ぶ向きもある。…
