...This movement was also driven by the efforts of engineers who, in 1856, formed the German Engineers' Association (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) and were increasingly aware of their role as the driving force behind Germany's rapid industrialization. Thus, from the 1970s onwards, technical schools across the country were elevated to technical universities, and in 1899 they gained the right to award degrees, making them essentially equivalent to universities. The background to this situation is that education and research at technical schools and universities of technology became more advanced and scientific (i.e. the scientification of engineering) as the modern engineering ideas of the Ecole Polytechnique took hold.
