A city on the border with Vietnam in the southwest of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, just before the terminus of the Xianggui Railway (Hengyang to Friendship Pass). Population 90,000 (1994). During the Song dynasty it was called Pingxiangtong, and during the Ming dynasty it was called Pingxiang Prefecture. During the Qing dynasty it was established as a Pingxiang Office, and in 1912 it was changed to a county. In 1951 it was incorporated into Ningming County, and in 1956 Pingxiang Town was separated and a city established. A key transportation point between China and Vietnam, it developed as traffic with Vietnam increased following the opening of the Xianggui Railway in 1951. 中国南部,広西チワン(壮)族自治区南西部のベトナムとの国境にある都市で,湘桂鉄道(衡陽~友誼関)の終点友誼関の手前にあたる。人口9万(1994)。宋代には憑祥峒と呼ばれ,明代は憑祥州治であった。清代に憑祥庁が置かれ,1912年県に改められた。51年寧明県に編入されたが,56年に憑祥鎮を分離して市が置かれた。中国・ベトナム間の交通の要地で,51年湘桂鉄道が開通してベトナムとの往来が盛んになるにつれて発達した。
