A German orchestra. One of the oldest existing orchestras in Europe. It began in 1781 with a concert at the newly built Gewandhaus (textile exhibition hall) in Leipzig, with Johann Adam Hiller (1728-1804) as its first conductor. It is a prestigious orchestra, with Mendelssohn also conducting there, but it was severely damaged during World War II and was rebuilt after the war by Franz Konwitschny (1901-62).
