Kapilavastu - Kapilavastu (English spelling)

Located in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India, in what is now the Terai region of southern Nepal, it is the capital where Buddha was born and raised. In Chinese translations of Buddhist scriptures it is written as Karbi-rawi. It is said to be the homeland of the Shakyas (Shakya), and many Buddhists still live there today. Its ancient location is believed to be near Piprahwa, where an urn with an inscription containing the remains of Buddha was discovered in 1898. About 16 kilometers to the east is Lumbini, said to be the birthplace of Buddha.

北インドのヒマラヤ山麓(さんろく)、現在のネパール南部のタライ地方にあり、仏陀(ぶっだ)の生まれ育った都城をいう。漢訳仏典では迦毘羅衛などと書かれている。シャーキヤ（釈迦(しゃか)）人の故郷と伝えられ、今日も仏教徒が多く居住している。その古代の位置は、1898年にピプラーワーで仏陀の遺骨が入っているとの銘文をもつ骨壺(こつつぼ)が発見されたことにより、その付近とされる。その東約16キロメートルの所に、仏陀の誕生地と伝えられるルンビニー（藍毘尼）がある。
