Sardine cloud - Iwashigumo

Japanese: いわし雲 - いわしぐも

A type of high-level cloud made up of ice crystals. It is generally known as a cirrocumulus cloud, but it does not strictly correspond to the name of the cloud type, and can also refer to an altocumulus cloud (→ Cloud shape). It is often seen in autumn, when sardine fishing is practiced, hence the name. It is also called mackerel cloud or scale cloud because its mottled shape resembles the pattern on mackerel's skin.

上層雲の一種で氷晶からなる。一般には巻積雲の俗称であるが，雲の類の名称と厳密に対応するわけではなく，高積雲をさす場合もある（→雲形）。秋によく見られ，そのときイワシ漁があることからこの名がある。まだらの形がサバの皮膚の模様に似ているため，さば雲またはうろこ雲とも呼ぶ。
