...The claimant to the throne traveled around the country and was recognized by each assembly. It was in the 13th and 14th centuries that the kingship, which began to be established in each country in the 10th and 11th centuries, succeeded in establishing laws that applied to the entire country, rather than a collection of laws that applied to individual legal areas (landskapslov, landskapslag). However, even after that, lower-level assemblies continued to function as autonomous peasant assemblies to the extent that the peasants had not lost their freedom.
