A type of sword fitting from the Kofun period. This style, with a fist-shaped bulge on the pommel, is unique to Japan and was seen in later periods. Some are inlaid with silver on an iron base, but generally they are made of gilt bronze and come in smooth or ridged surfaces. The tsuba (guard guard) is large and inverted egg-shaped, and the scabbard is also decorative, with a thin plate of gilt bronze decorated with a beaded pattern using the hammering technique. It is also large, measuring over one meter, and is thought to have been a large sword used for ceremonial guards rather than for actual combat. The name kabutsuchi is said to have come to be used after the Edo period, as it appears in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki as kabutsuchi.
