A freshwater turtle of the family Erythridae (subfamily Batagurinae) that is most commonly seen in ponds in parks in Japan (illustration). It is found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Iki, Tsushima, as well as the Korean Peninsula, eastern China, and Taiwan. Its carapace length is 10-25cm, and females are larger than males. It lives in ponds and rivers, and in parks and temple ponds it coexists with the Japanese pond turtle, but can be distinguished by the following: the rear half of the top of the head is covered with fine scales, the edges of the carapace are smooth and not jagged, there are bright yellow spots on the head and neck, and each carapace is bordered with yellow. 日本では公園の池などでもっともふつうに見られるヌマガメ科バタグールガメ亜科Batagurinaeの淡水性カメ(イラスト)。本州,四国,九州,壱岐,対馬のほか,朝鮮半島,中国東部,台湾に分布。甲長10~25cm,雌は雄よりも大きくなる。池や川にすみ,公園や社寺の池ではニホンイシガメと混生しているが,次の点で区別できる。すなわち本種は頭頂の後半部が細鱗に覆われ,背甲の周縁が滑らかでギザギザ状でなく,頭頸部に鮮やかな黄色の斑紋があり,各甲板は黄色で縁取られている。
