…The main force of the British army in the American War of Independence was 17,000 Hessian soldiers. The Landgrave of Hesse became an elector in 1803 (Hesse-Kassel was later called Kurhessen), and after the revolution of 1830, a constitution was promulgated in 1831. However, conflicts between the reactionary monarch, government, and people continued until the country was annexed by Prussia in 1866. On the other hand, Hesse-Darmstadt was not a particularly notable country, except for the literary salon of Landgrave's wife Henriette Caroline Christiane (1721-74) at the end of the 18th century. However, during the Napoleonic era, it became a grand duchy in 1806, and as part of the Confederation of the Rhine, it greatly expanded its territory, and in 1820 it promulgated a constitution, raising the country's status. …
