kudüm (English spelling) kudum

...It is the ancestor of the Western timpani. In Turkish Sufi religious music and traditional art music, drums of the same kind as the naqqara are called kudüm. The naqqara spread to Europe from the Mediterranean and the Balkan Peninsula in the 13th century, and also reached India via trade routes, where it is called a pan-shaped drum such as nāgārā. However, in India in particular, various types of drums are given names that are variations of this word, causing confusion.
