Lindsay (Nicholas) Vachel
Born November 10, 1879 in Springfield, Illinois
Died December 5, 1931, Springfield, Illinois. American poet. He studied art in Chicago and New York while also working on poetry, and wandered around the country reciting his own poems. He became a central figure in the new poetry movement with his powerful rhythms and fresh images in General William Booth Enters Into Heaven (1913), The Congo (14), The Chinese Nightingale (17), and others. He continued to publish collections of poems after that, but after 1920 there was almost nothing worth seeing except The Candle in the Cabin (26). He gradually became skeptical of life, and tormented by a sick conscience, he committed suicide by taking poison.
