Marco Polo Bridge Incident

Japanese: 蘆溝橋事件 - ろこうきょうじけん

This incident, which began on the night of July 7, 1937 (Showa 12) near the Marco Polo Bridge in the southwestern suburbs of Beijing (then Beiping), was a clash between Japanese and Chinese troops that began on the night of July 7, 1937 (Showa 12), and marked the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. It is also known as the July 7 Incident. At the time in China, the anti-Japanese and national salvation movement was growing against Japan's attempts to invade North China, and the situation in North China was tense. On that night, a Japanese company commander engaged in nighttime training north of the Marco Polo Bridge heard the sound of live ammunition and, after one soldier went missing (he would soon return to his unit), he prepared for combat, and at dawn the following day, the 8th, attacked Chinese military positions, entering into combat.

北京(当時は北平)の南西郊外にある蘆溝橋付近で1937年(昭和12)7月7日夜に始まった日中両軍の衝突事件で，日中戦争の発端となった。七･七事件ともいう。当時中国では華北侵略をはかる日本に対して抗日救国運動が高まり華北情勢は緊迫していたが，この夜蘆溝橋の北で夜間演習中の日本軍中隊長が実弾射撃の音を聞き，兵1名が不明となった(まもなく帰隊)ことから戦闘態勢に入り，翌8日夜明けに中国軍陣地を攻撃して戦闘にはいった。
