Title of the book. Written by Konakamura Kiyonori. Published in 1888 (Meiji 21). Two volumes. A pioneering document that describes the general history of Japanese music. It extracts and organizes articles related to music and performing arts from various books and gives a brief overview of their views. It begins with the mythological period of the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, and covers early modern kouta (Japanese folk songs) in 15 chapters, concluding with a general overview of the history. As the title suggests, the subject matter is not only music, but also dance and theater. Methodologically speaking, it is a budding researcher of new Japanese music history, and it remains a must-read document for researchers. However, the emphasis is on gagaku, and there are few descriptions of early modern Japanese music, especially the shakuhachi. It was included in the Iwanami Bunko in 1928 (Showa 3), and was recently republished.
