Kiria - Kiria

Kiria - Kiria

[Prosperity during the reign of Archduke Stephen]
Thus, despite being caught between the three great powers of Eastern Europe at the time, it was Archduke Stephen (reigned 1457-1504) who sought independence and built the principality's most glorious period. He first allied with the King of Poland, and in 1465 captured Chilia, a port city on the lower Danube that was then controlled by Hungary and Wallachia, and in 1467 fought off the army of Hungarian King Matthias I and won a great victory at Baia. He then refused to pay tribute to the Sultan, and in 1475 defeated the army of Suleiman Pasha at the Battle of Vaslui.
