...They said that there are two types of substances that cause cell division at the wounded area: one that comes from the wounded cell itself (wound hormone) and one that comes from the vascular bundle (leptohormone). In 1927, Herbert's student B. Wehnelt found a biological method to quantify this hormone by removing seeds from the immature kidney bean pods and applying a sample liquid to the inside of the pod, which causes the pod to rise up. Since then, research into isolating and identifying the substance has progressed rapidly. Using this method, American J. English and his colleagues found that the pods used as materials at that time contained wound hormones, and in 1939 they isolated the substance as crystals and identified it as traumatic acid (⊿ 1 -decene-1,10-dicarboxylic acid, HOOC-CH=CH-(CH 2 ) 8 -COOH). ...
