Takeshi [Village] - Takeshi

Japanese: 武石[村] - たけし

A village in Chiisagata County, central Nagano Prefecture. Population 4,234 (1995). Most of the village area is part of the Chikuma Mountains, with Utsukushigahara spreading to the west. The main industry is agriculture, and until the 1950s, silkworm farming was the mainstay, but now livestock farming, mainly chicken and pig farming, vegetable cultivation such as tomatoes and cucumbers, and rice farming are thriving. There has been a high outflow of population, so as a measure to combat depopulation, factories producing electrical equipment, agricultural machinery, food products, etc. have been invited to the area. In recent years, the population has remained stable. With the completion of the Venus Line (1981), Utsukushigahara has become a tourist destination, and the number of tourists is increasing year by year.

長野県中部，小県（ちいさがた）郡の村。人口4234(1995)。村域の大部分が筑摩山地に属し，西部に美ヶ原が広がる。主産業は農業で，昭和30年代までは養蚕が中心であったが，現在は養鶏，養豚を中心とする畜産，トマト，キュウリなどの野菜栽培，稲作が盛んになっている。人口の流出が激しく，過疎対策として電機，農業機械，食料品などの工場が誘致されている。近年人口は横ばい状態にある。ビーナスラインの完成(1981)により美ヶ原の観光地化が進み，観光客も年々増えている。
