An idealistic farm established in April 1841 in West Roxbury, a suburb of Boston, by a follower of American Transcendentalism. Later, influenced by C. Fourier, it was also called the Phalanx. In the words of its leader, George Ripley (1802-1880), the aim of the enterprise was "to secure a more natural unity between the labor of the head and the labor of the hands than exists at present," but financial difficulties led to the farm's collapse as early as 1846. Hawthorne's novel, The Blithedale Romance, was based on his own experiences at the farm. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
