In Italy, they were first used as wall mirrors, but because they were small and expensive, they were fitted with lavishly carved frames to enhance their decorative effect. The oldest Jacobean wall mirrors in England also follow the Italian method, and were influenced by the gorgeous woodcarvings of G.
