…Glass mirrors made from a compound of tin and mercury were made by the Venetians in the 14th century, but it was not until the mid-16th century that they were produced as practical glass mirrors. In Italy, they were first used as wall mirrors, but because they were small and expensive, they were fitted with lavishly carved frames to enhance their decorative effect. The oldest Jacobean wall mirrors in England also follow the Italian method, and were influenced by the gorgeous woodcarvings of G. Gibbons (1648-1721), and the effect of the frames was highly valued. …
