Also called oxynitrile. A general term for compounds that have a nitrile group (-CN) and a hydroxyl group (OH) in the molecule. They are produced by reacting aldehydes or ketones with hydrogen cyanide. They are decomposed into the original compound and alkali cyanide by the action of an alkali.
